If you have been in touch of the NFL world, by now you know that the 2013 NFL Draft has taken place. Although it was not hyped or put on front page news because there were no Andrew Luck’s or Robert Griffin III (RG3)’s in this year’s class, there were quite a few major surprises that took place. One of those surprising moves was the New York Jets adding another Quarterback to their circus when they signed Geno Smith. I am sure than many people that witnessed this move was thinking either “What the Hell???” or “How can you add more drama to a three ring circus?”

Immediately after acquiring Smith, the Jets had to realize that they had to actually limit their quarterback madness to two (strongest 3) quarterbacks. Out of all of thirty-two teams in the entire league, the New York Jets held five or six quarterbacks in their possession: Tim Tebow, starter Mark Sanchez, David Garrad, Matt Simms, Greg McElroy, and the newly acquired Geno Smith. So after the Jets sat down (can y’all actually believe that they sat down and thought about something????!) they actually came to the conclusion that they actually had a problem. So, they decided on a few moves. One move was to actually have a try out to decide who was going to be starter and who was going to be the second string. The next move that they decided was that they was actually going to let someone (or the remaining Quaterbacks) go from the team.

The first set of quarterbacks that were up for debate were…Tim Tebow vs. Mark Sanchez. Now, if you have been following the situation between these two, you can kind of guess that it was going to reach a feverish pitch real soon. When it came to these two, it was kind of simple: they had one quarterback that can fill seats yet many will say caused a huge headache while at the same time had a quarterback that…well…no one really liked and/or in many times, didn’t really believe in yet he also came with a lot of sticky tape and a high price tag that could be costly for the team. So, by dawn’s early light (and maybe having some drinks the night before), they decided to actually make the move that (let’s face it, the vast majority of us did see this coming) and release Tim Tebow. The news hit the airwaves hard and fast.

So, now that Tebow is actually free of the Jets drama (and in all honesty, he should be thanking God for that move), what are his options?

Well, a while back, the New England Patriots entertained the idea of signing Tebow to the squad. Now, I will be the first to say this: I had mixed emotions on this theory. So, before I go and give my thoughts on this, allow me to present to the NFL court both sides of having Tebow becoming a Patriot.

Pros:
•	Lighting up Brady’s load. Whether people like it or not, one thing that people have to do is give the Pats their credit. No one has to question who the leader of the team is…Tom Brady. In many clutch situations, he is awesome. However, as he is getting up there in both personal age and NFL age, some may say that he’s losing his touch. So, adding Tebow to the team will allow Brady to rest up and build up his weakest spots and continue to keep his strong skills up.

•	Improving Tebow’s resume and skills. Let’s all admit it, once upon a time, Tebow’s resume looked okay. Although he went from second string quarterback to starter, let the truth be told, the Broncos DID have some faith in him. (Besides, if they didn’t I am very sure they would’ve changed quarterbacks BEFORE the playoffs started.). By adding the Patriots to his NFL resume, when the time was right, other teams will have a larger percentage of giving him a second chance. He will also have a chance to study under Brady and understand what team unity is as well as how it works. I can also add that, whether people like it or not, the New England Patriots carry that power and prestige like the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers. If you don’t believe me, ask this question: why are so many people (rookies and veterans) are after the Pats? If you don’t believe that the Pats are just that prestigious, look at Chad Johnson, Randy Moss, and Terrell Owens. Owens has been out of the league for a while and he’s trying to get back in and become a Patriot while many would agree that both Johnson and Moss, who are former Patriots, would have not been given a second chance if they didn’t have the Pats on their resumes.

So, with all of that, the question has to come up: why should the Pats NOT touch Tebow?

•	Attention. One thing that many non-Pats can agree on that they get too much attention. Some may even argue that they always get their way. (Sidebar: I seriously digress!) No matter how much they try, if they do something-good or bad-it will be scrutinized longer versus a non-Pats member doing the same thing. One thing that many many will say is that Tebow attracts a whole lot of attention-no matter where he goes. So, adding those two together…hmm…that would be much more attention than they truly want.

•	Training and Time Investment. Although the Pats are known for taking players and making them into unforgettable players, one common denominator is that they came with a nice percentage of talent and then built on that. With Tebow, many would say that his talent is somewhat very little to nonexistent which will mean that Belichik and Co. will have to invest in a whole lot of time in order to break Tebow down and make him a better player and with all that they have on their plates…that may be too much for them. Now in an odd twist of fate, it may actually become a plus for both of them.

So, after what I have read on the situation, what do I think of it? Well, to be honest, because of the attention that Tebow brings, it would be a huge headache to have him on the team. Yet, sometimes in order to see if we are right or wrong about something, we have to actually test them out.

So, why am I writing this now? Well, although it has been reported by The Bleacher Report that Coach BB hates Tebow as a player, one thing that many will have to keep in mind is that we are talking about the New England Patriots and they come with more tricks up their sleeves than a card dealer in Vegas.

When it comes to the NFL, every single move is quite exciting….and interesting. If you thought that the madness was over, I have three words for you: Hold.That.Thought!

Until we meet again, may your days be sweet and your nights are sinful and delicious!

By: Sophia Stanton-Cross

By now I am sure everyone has heard the news that Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank has struck a deal with the City of Atlanta and Atlanta’s Mayor Kasim Reed in building a new Dome for the football team. Although the stadium is not that old looking, the new Dome will come with some new features such as a retractable rooftop and more state of the art equipment.

Although the deal comes with the option that the citizens of Atlanta will not have to contribute anything to the massive bill that will be incurred, there is a huge debate on the stadium…and it’s quite interesting.

So the famous question is…should the Falcons get a new stadium now or later?

On one hand, many Falcons fans are arguing that the team SHOULD get a new stadium now due to the fact that it will now only benefit the team but it will be a “win win” situation for both the team and the City of Atlanta, both exposure and financial wise. During the last time that both the SuperBowl as well as WrestleMania was in hosted by the city of Atlanta, one of the main complaints was that the Georgia Dome was too small and couldn’t hold the tremendous crowds that those two events hold. They argue that by granting the wish to build a bigger Dome, more events can be hosted here as well as the revenue will be a HUGE blessing to the citizens of Atlanta-and maybe all over the state of Georgia.

Now just as there are folks thankful for this deal being approved, there are some people that are saying to put the brakes on that idea REAL QUICK! (Now the reasoning that the naysayers have for the stadium to be built is one that is….well…I’ll leave that judgment up to y’all.) According to those that are against the new stadium idea will argue that the Falcons DON’T deserve the “gift” due to the fact that they haven’t brought home the famous Vince Lombardi trophy (for those that don’t know, it’s widely known as the SuperBowl trophy. The trophy is named after the one and only Vince Lombardi.) Some actually feel that the only way that the team should be able to get a new stadium is IF and only IF the team gave something to the city to “show” for it. So, from their perspective… NO TROPHY… NO STADIUM.

We’ve all heard the famous question “What came first-the chicken or the egg?” Perhaps many people can agree that this question will be only answered as time goes on.
Until we meet again, May your days be sweet and your nights are sinful and delicious.

-Sophia Stanton-Cross
P.S. The reason why that this article is short is due to the fact that I will try to follow up this article with articles and interviews by either Mayor Kasim Reed and/or Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank.

The Atlanta Braves arrived in Washington on a serious roll with a record of 8-1. Nothing has changed in the loss column as they leave the nation’s capital with an MLB-best 11-1 mark.

They are a 2-0 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies away from being undefeated. Cliff Lee was lights out that night, so you had to tip your cap.

This is the third straight series sweep for the Braves. Unlike the Cubs and Marlins (a combined 6-16 coming into Sunday), the Nationals are legit.

They are a popular pick to win the World Series.

The fact that Atlanta went into Nationals Park—where Washington was previously undefeated—and beat Stephen Strasburg and Gio Gonzalez along the way speaks even more volumes.

It’s early. It’s April. We all know.

But it is as big a statement as a team can make against its bitter division rival in early April.

After two tough, two-run victories to start the series, the Braves pummeled the Nationals 9-0 in the finale. Paul Maholm kept the Nats bats quiet while the Braves offense went to work on Gonzalez.

Atlanta’s hot start has generated both excitement and cautious optimism. Fans definitely hope they can keep up the great play while saving something for October.

The ’98 Yankees hold the record with their .704 single-season winning percentage. So the Braves are going to cool off at some point without a doubt.

Manager Fredi Gonzalez said it best in his postgame press conference after Friday’s 6-4, comeback win.

“We haven’t even began to swing the bats yet.”

He’s right.

The Braves are batting .258 as a team.

Included in this are Jason Heyward’s .103, B.J. Upton’s .163, Dan Uggla’s .171 andAndrelton Simmons’ .211 averages.

As good as things have been, they are still capable of taking it up another gear at some point.

Freddie Freeman is on the DL, and Brian McCann hasn’t even set foot on the field yet.

Same goes for the bullpen. Cristhian Martinez and Johnny Venters are out of action right now. When all these guys come back, a strong team becomes that much stronger.

All of this still hasn’t even mentioned the contributions of bench players Ramiro Pena, Reed Johnson and the job Evan Gattis has done in his fill-in role.

The season is young, but they have already been a lot of fun to watch. It has the makings of being a great season Atlanta.

All stats are accurate as of 4/14/13.

Te Cheeks’s All Star starting 5

PG: JOHN WALL:
Wall has been on FIRE as of late, averaging 30 points this week, but his best game came against Chicago w/ 27 points 9 assists and 1 turnover.

SG: GREIVIS VASQUEZ:
Vasquez has been a stud this entire week, 15 points and 9 assists against Golden State, 21 points 9 assists vs Utah and balled out last night against the Lakers putting up a nice double double of 11 points 11 assists.

SF: CARMELO ANTHONY:
obviously Carmelo is the only player that could possibly fit it this spot, he’s been dominating, we know he’s a scorer, his range this week fell in between 36 and 50 points every single game, but we expect that from Melo…what was nice was the bonus of grabbing rebounds, 8 in one game, 12 in another, 14 in another and in most of the games this week he created zero turnovers.

PF: TRISTAN THOMPSON:
Phenomenal week for Tristan especially against Boston with 29points and 17 rebounds.

C: ANTHONY DAVIS:
Davis has been a different player since coming back from the all-star break, this week he’s averaging 20 points and 9 rebounds and also has been a good defensive threat averaging 2 steals and 2 blocks per game.

By: Dane Holt

Tonight we figure out who will be playing for the NCAA championship as the final four begins in Atlanta . The teams who have made it to this far are Cuse, Wichita St, Michigan, and Louisville. There was a lot of anticipation going into this years tournament due to the amount of teams having great seasons. Ironically Louisville remains the only #1 to have advance this far.

Louisville will be playing Wichita State who recently defeated Ohio State to advance. This Wichita team is tough and have displayed how they don’t fear any team and totally disregard rankings. However they are playing a Louisville team that has looked like the best team this year. The pressure defense that Louisville applies is hard to beat and I think they will turn over Wichita numerous times in a win.

Syracuse will be playing Michigan which should be entertaining to say the least. The Cuse zone has looked tremendous this tournament and have held opponents to shooting a low field goal percentage . Also , the development of Carter-Williams has been special to watch. He is a handful at PG and has made the right decisions on when he needs to shoot or distribute the ball. Michigan is a team starring Trey Burke who is the player of the year. Aside from him the team has a few NBA bound players and can all fill it up from 3. It will be interesting to see if they can work the zone and stop Syracuse in transition . I like Cuse winning this in a close game setting up a Big East championship game.

Okay, so here we are: miles away from so much in the NFL world: The NFL Draft, the training camps, the pre, regular AND post season…and of course…the Super Bowl itself.
Yet, the huge announcement has been made: the NFL Franchise craze is underway!
Now for many people, it’s an exciting moment for their team and they are amped up about it. Yet in all honesty, many folks are lost in all of the “Franchise Tag” hype.
Well, before you become another lost number in the crowd, take a read at this information here.

According to the famous Wikipedia,
“In the National Football League, the franchise tag is a designation a team may apply to a player scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent. The tag binds the player to the team for one year if certain conditions are met. Each team has access each year to only one franchise tag (of either the exclusive or non-exclusive forms) and one transition tag. As a result, each team may only designate one player each year as that team’s franchise player. It has been designed to reduce player movement (often to bigger markets) which is often evidenced in other major pro sports leagues.
Usually reserved for players of great skill or of high importance to the team, a franchise tag allows a team’s general manager the privilege of strategically retaining valuable free-agent players while seeking talent through the NFL draft or other acquisitions without exceeding the League’s salary cap. A team may also franchise tag a player with 2 or more years left on a contract…”

So basically, what it means is that it’s a way for coaches and owners to keep their most valuable asset in their possession. It also helps the team in the salary cap and/or the franchise’s finances. Now let’s not forget to mention that the team can also exercise the option to NOT use the Franchise tag at all for any of its players.
So far, players to mention that have been tagged are: Wes Welker (New England Patriots), Drew Brees (New Orleans Saints), Fred Davis (Washington Redskins), DeSean Jackson (Philadelphia Eagles), Ray Rice (Baltimore Ravens), Matt Forte (Chicago Bears), Michael Vick (Philadelphia Eagles), Peyton Manning (Indianapolis Colts). Of course, there are countless others to mention.

To many fans, it’s a time that holds some value in the NFL due to the fact that both the fans as well as every NFL franchise will love to see the face that will represent the entire franchise. Many coaches and/or owners go through the roster with a fine tooth comb in order to select that ONE main player that will “carry the torch” for the entire team. I am sure that for the team’s that have actually used the NFL Tag, they may agree that the right choice will add more popularity to the team…which usually means more cash in the team’s pocket.

So, with the knowledge of the benefits that comes with the NFL franchise tag, is there a downside to it? Well, depends on how you look at it.

Some may say that one downside of the tag is that for those that actually desire to become a free agent once the season is over? Keep in mind that although the tag option is 100 percent optional, situations can spring up. For example, let’s say that the franchise wants to pick a particular player for the tag however he’s expressing that he wants to take a gamble with the NFL free agent AND after analyzing the entire situation, this player is a HUGE asset to the team. The pressure’s on HEAVY! So, what does one do? It’s just like the famous question from the movie “War of the Roses” “How do you keep someone who wants to go and how do you get rid of someone who wants to stay?”

Another downfall to it is that what if the “wrong choice” was tagged? If many fans judge the franchise according to the “tagged” player, many will argue that if the wrong player was “tagged” or they thought someone else was better, what happens then? Will the choice come back to haunt them? OR can it still be worked out in their favor?

Okay, so with the info and the playing field set up and explained, the next question is: WHO will be (or SHOULD BE) selected to wear the Tag? To many of the fans, that is where the fun part comes in. According to @tuckjt, he says that Keller should get the tag (yet he knows someone who deserves it more than he does.) When it comes to the New England Patriots, it’s honestly hard for me to say who should get it. One player that will NOT be tagged this year is Wes Welker, one player that has been tagged before. In fact, I would not be surprised if they along with other teams in the NFL do not exercise their option to tag this season.

The NFL franchise tag is one of the many situations that come with both a gift and a curse. As many philosophers would tell the coaches and owners of every franchise-two simple words: “choose wisely”
Until we meet again, may your days be sweet and your nights be sinful and delicious.

*Quick update: it has been announced that the vast majority of the NFL teams, including the Patriots, have decided to NOT use the Franchise Tag option. Only a total of eight teams have actually used the option in comparison of 20+teams that used it last season.

Now the fun begins! The Atlantic division leading New York Knicks begin their post all star break season with many questions needing answers. Although they still remain 2nd in the eastern conference standings, the Knicks are clearly not the same team from November. Age as well as injuries have disrupted the flow of the team and they have yet to get that same cohesion back. With the trade dead line approaching the Knicks must at least listen to offers as well as possibly look at available free agents. The Knicks are lacking in many areas and banking on them to correct themselves this late in the season can be detrimental.

First red flag has to be age. Jason Kidd’s play has dramatically taken a hit once he was over used during Raymond Felton’s hand injury. His defense as well as jump shot have looked of a player who is pushing 40 years old. I still think he has something left in the tank but banking on him will be high risk with low reward. Both Marcus Camby and Rasheed Wallace have been sidelined for weeks with foot injuries. This is critical due to the Knicks lack of size and injury riddled Amare Stoudemire. If neither are able to come back healthy and contribute consistently the Knicks once magical season will be in jeopardy. With age being such a factor they must at least explore alternatives at both guard and power forward positions

The second red flag has to be Iman Shumpert’s play. Although he is in his second year and coming off of ACL surgery, it is clear right now he is not the same player. His lack of lateral movement along with hesitant offensive play has to be a major concern. If this continues to be a problem the Knicks will be forced to rely on JR Smith heavily. This is not a bad thing but JR as a go to man is not an ideal situation. I am still against trading Shumpert because he is still young but you do have to be concerned if he will ever regain that rookie season glow.

My third red flag has to be Amare Stoudemire. His inconsistent play along with lack of defense has to be a major concern. Although Amare has shown signs of his 2010 self at times, he clearly is not the same player and never will be. With that said I still think the Knicks have to look at starting him at some point. Amare plays better with a true center on the floor who can hide his defensive flaws. Plus the entire Melo, Tyson, and Amare theory has already been proven that they are all more effiecient when playing together.

Last but not least the over use of Carmelo Anthony has to stop. Carmelo clearly hit a major wall in the middle of January and needed the all star break desperately. I do expect him to have another MVP type resurgence but I honestly don’t think the Knicks need that. The Knicks must get back to ball movement and pick and rolls. Isolation plays for Carmelo must be limited for this team to advance in the playoffs. The time is now to implement their style of play from November. For the Knicks to be successful, they must get back to their foundation of defense and ball movement. If not this team will be in big trouble come playoff time.

AN UNFAIR ADVANTAGE
By: LaSheena R. McBride 2/11/13

Although it is a new year, the NCAA is still operating with the same old mindset. Is it fair for them to capitalize off of their football and basketball student athletic abilities, without giving them a fair portion of the profits? Apparently, they believe so or players would be receiving some of those profits that are being made off of them. Now of course, some say that an education is money, which is true; however, students maybe giving full scholarships from the colleges they attend, but since they are still working towards their degree, it will more so benefit them once they have finished school. Also, the NCAA also gives their student athletes other amenities; however, we are no longer operating under the barter system, so a student cannot bring a pair of Nike’s to a gas station in exchange for gas; therefore, the amenities that colleges give these athletes only go so far. Furthermore, please do not be deceived by the words “full athletic scholarship”. The definition of the word full is the greatest degree or extent; completely or entirely.

Therefore, when a student receives a “full athletic scholarship”, all it covers the cost of his or hers education, room, and board. It does not mean the student is exempted from paying other out of pocket expenses that is not included. It is very rare that a “full scholarship” cover everything a student athlete needs. So, a full scholarship is full in one aspect, but partial in another. Now of course, whatever is not covered by the full scholarship the students and their parents are left to shoulder the burden of these expenses, which does not help the situation; especially since most of these students come from homes where their parent or parents are struggling to make ends meet; therefore, they cannot afford the extra expenses for them.

Moreover, according to the NCAA Bylaw 12, student athletes can actually work, but with how the football and basketball schedules are configured, working may only benefit these student athletes during the summer time. Honestly, these students should not have to worry about their finances while attending college. Everything they need should automatically be included in the full scholarship, plus they should be giving pocket money. I know that these schools are giving the students the opportunity to play the sport they love, while receiving an education; nonetheless, the student athletes are also doing the NCAA a favor as well. Could there actually be any school sports without the athletes who want to play them? Therefore, from my perspective both sides are getting something out of the deal, but of course the NCAA has the unfair advantage. They are the ones who get to have their “cake” while eating it too.

Nevertheless, they are also the ones who set the rules and restrictions on these players, while they reap the benefits. In addition to that, the NCAA has the audacity to penalize their student athletes if or when they take gifts or money from coaches and teachers, by suspending them for a certain amount of games. I wonder sometimes do people in organizations such as the NCAA, ever realistically think things through before imposing such rules and regulation on others, while expecting them to comply with them? Many of the rules and regulations set by the NCAA really sound like a bunch of malarkey to me. Maybe if they gave students a fair piece of the profit, they wouldn’t have to take money underneath the table from anyone. These students appear to be doing this, not so much to be blatantly rebellious, but because they need the money. And while speaking of money, the NCAA is making MILLIONS and MILLIONS, and MILLIONS of dollars off of these football and basketball players alone. Plus, if you factor in the TV deals, it’s BILLIONS of dollar being made. And the fact they believe that giving students just a scholarship is enough, make them appear to be out of touch with reality and most of all DOWN RIGHT GREEDY!!! It would not hurt the NCAA or the schools for that matter, if they gave each football and basketball player a debit card with certain amount of money a month, so they can at least have some pocket money.

Do they not care that many of these students are struggling financially? How about the fact that their parents are? Have they forgotten their students are young people who would like to enjoy life outside of school and aside from the sport they play? More so, these students would like to enjoy a movie and have a complete meal once and awhile, other than eating Beef Ramen noodles, Vienna sausages, with a Capri Sun. To me, it’s not that the NCAA or the schools have forgotten this. It’s more so they do not seem to care just as long as their pockets can continue to be full by taking advantage of the player’s talent. Obviously, this issue will NEVER go away; therefore, will we ever see a day when football and basketball student athletes get a fair piece of the pie? Will the day come when these players are compensated with more than just a scholarship? Will student athletes wake up, band together, and come against the schools and the NCAA over this matter? All these things remain to be seen, but I do believe something will eventually be done about this.

                        KNICKS GET NEEDED WIN

The Knicks for the second straight game have not looked like themselves. Especially considering both of the teams they have played were sub .500. Their “D” continues to struggle. NY is not getting set up in transition fast enough. It seems just like the Washington game with Wall. The Knicks struggle with speedy guards. Last night it was Ricky Rubio that had the Knicks scratching their heads at some points at The Target Center in Minnesota. Although Shumpert has been back for 11 games, his playing style has not. Shumpert after the game said, “Soon my body will catch up to my mind, taking a little longer than I thought, but if it was easy everyone would do it”. NY is in need of big men, so with Rasheed due back after the all-star break, things might start to change defensive wise.

It was not till down the stretch in the fourth that the Knicks started to look like themselves. They closed the game on a 24-7 run. The biggest play of the game came with only 33 seconds left. Even though the “D” played awful, with the Knicks up by 1 Felton got a huge steal and passed it to JR, who got the basket and foul to put NY up by 4.

Unlike last game the Knicks bench showed up scoring 41 points. The victory though was primarily due to Carmelo Anthony. Melo was carrying the team throughout the game scoring 36 points. Even being the savor of the team does not mean that you’re not going to get called out by Woodson. In the third quarter Woodson had some words for Melo about not switching in the pick and roll. Just goes to show you Mike is not showing any favoritism. He’s trying to win the championship, so if he sees something off, even if it’s his star he’s going to call the player out. Melo said after the game “We all kept our composer knowing that if we get this loss we will have a LONG night”.

A couple of congratulations goes out to Jason Kidd on getting his 12,000th career assist, and Coach Mike Woodson for collecting 50 wins in the shortest amount of time in franchise history, doing it in 72 games. Woodson said of this milestone “The players put me in this position. I’m just going along for the ride. I’m happy to be here”. Also to Novocain for making it to the three-point contest and James White making it to the slam-dunk contest. White who was added to the contest was due to Dwayne Wade’s suggestion. Both Wade and Kevin Durant commented on how they watched him dunk for years and how mesmerizing it was. White joked around after the game about the contest saying, “I’m not practicing any dunks, I already have it”.

Tomorrow the Knicks face the Clippers in Madison Square Garden. NY still remains a game and a half behind the Heat in the Eastern Conference.
